Catholic United Financial, along with the Mary Queen of Peace Council, would like to recognize Norbert and Betty Zahler from Rogers, Minnesota at Mary Queen of Peace as Volunteers of the Month. Norbert (Norb) has been a member of Catholic United Financial for 74 years since 1947! We thank him for his many, many, years of membership. Norb and Betty were married in 1952 and have demonstrated the very essence of fraternalism and servitude to their parish that we at Catholic United hope to instill: that all people are financially secure, faith-filled, and engaged in their communities. As life-long members of Catholic United and pillars of their community, Norb and Betty have been an inspiration to many.
Norbert’s service to the parish began way back when he was in high school. During that time, they were building St. Martin Catholic School (now Mary Queen of Peace) and Norb was there to help with the construction. Over the last couple of years, Norbert was there yet again to assist with the planning for the brand-new Parish Life Center at Mary Queen of Peace. Norb is known as a “Mr. Fix-It” around the school and parish. When he sees that something needs to be repaired, he is right on it.
Like Norb, Betty is involved in many aspects of the parish and is not afraid to jump in and help where needed, without being asked and without looking for recognition. Betty always leads by example while trying to meet people where they are on their faith journey. Betty is known as a kind, gentle soul with the ability to communicate and relate to any age. She has left a big impression on the young people of the parish. During Vacation Bible School, the children love to come and give Betty hugs and she makes time for each one. The older kids love her as well and she cares for them as her own. She always makes sure there are cookies or treats for the Confirmation students at the meetings and to show appreciation, provides meals for the teachers.
Beginning in 1985, Betty worked for many years as the Director of Religious Education at Mary Queen of Peace. During that time, she organized Faith Formation classes, Christmas programs, Vacation Bible School, Confirmation, and the Catholic United Matching Grant breakfast, amongst other things as a staff member and volunteer. She had quite a gift for recruiting Faith Formation volunteer teachers and volunteers for the breakfast. Betty worked tirelessly to ensure the matching grant breakfasts were a success, from planning, purchasing food and supplies, organizing volunteers, to working at the breakfasts herself. She would work all day at the breakfast through cleanup. Betty does it all. She currently volunteers as the Catholic United Financial Council Secretary.
Both Norb and Betty dedicate their lives to Mary Queen of Peace. They can be seen at every event, helping wherever needed – NEVER saying no when asked to do something. They truly live their lives by being good stewards of the parish, offering their time, talent, and treasure. For their dedication to Mary Queen of Peace and to Catholic United, we are delighted to recognize them as our volunteers of the month. Congratulations Norbert and Betty, and thank you for all you do!
