Kathy Hemmelgarn has been a leading volunteer in St. Henry’s parish for decades. She has arranged and executed many special events in support of the parish school. This year she arranged, cooked, and served a special German-style supper as a fundraiser. She made everything from scratch, even grinding her own wheat and rye for ‘rustic’ rye bread! In a similar manner, Kathy has provided hand-made crafts and rosaries for the diocesan Mission office and comforting meals for parish families at the funerals of their loved ones. To top it all off, Kathy has come out of ‘retirement’ to be a catechist for the 8th-grade girls. Kathy has been involved in almost every facet of parish life in service and leadership.
In addition to many years of service as President of the Catholic United council, Kathy has launched many fundraising events for St. Henry’s Area School. When several of the local Hispanic families lost their homes to fire, Kathy stepped up to arrange fundraisers for them. This led to Kathy bringing the Hispanic community into greater involvement with the parish festival, helping them to feel welcome and needed in the community. Kathy continues to look for new ways to support the parish and school and pass on her many skills to the next generation.
